The common cold and the flu (influenza) are infections of the upper respiratory system – the nose, mouth, throat, and lungs. The infections are caused by viruses. Colds and flu have many of the same symptoms. However, cold symptoms are usually milder than flu symptoms and develop more slowly.
No medicines can “cure” colds or the flu. However, there are prescription medications that can ease the discomfort caused by the symptoms of colds and flu. In addition, there are prescription medicines and a vaccine that can treat and prevent the flu. Let Delta Urgent Care handle your immunization against the flu by coming in annually for a flu shot.
The flu vaccine works by exposing the immune system to viruses. The body responds by building antibodies (the body’s defense system) against the flu. The flu shot contains dead flu viruses. The nasal spray contains live, but weakened, flu viruses. The nasal spray is only approved for healthy children and adults two to 49 years old and who are not pregnant.
What is a sore throat?
A sore throat is a painful, dry, or scratchy feeling in the throat. Pain in the throat is one of the most common symptoms. It accounts for more than 13 million visits to doctor’s offices each year. Sore throats (Pharyngitis) can be caused by viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, or by environmental factors like dry air. Although a sore throat can be uncomfortable, our providers will be able to provide a more in-depth diagnosis to help solve your symptoms.
